WHAT IS POWERCHAIR FOOTBALL?
Powerchair Football is a fast, tactical indoor sport designed for people who use electric wheelchairs. It is played on a standard basketball court using a 13‑inch football. The sport focuses on precision driving, teamwork, and strategy, with competitive leagues, national teams, and even a World Cup. There is also a Development League for new players, similar to grassroots football, offering a friendly and supportive place to learn the sport.
HOW THE GAME WORKS
The objective the game is to score more goals than the opposing team using your powerchair to pass, dribble, and shoot.
Teams consist of 4 players, the middle player, 2 wingers and a goalkeeper with rolling substitutions permitted. The matches last for 40 minutes with 2 half of 20 minutes with a short break at half time
rules
The Two‑on‑One Rule Only one player from each team may be within 3 metres of the ball at the same time (except the goalkeeper). The Three‑Metre Rule At free kicks, all players must stay at least 3 meters away until the ball is played. No Contact Deliberate ramming or dangerous driving is not allowed.
The powerchairs
Powerchair Football uses electric wheelchairs fitted with a strong front bumper (footguard) for striking and controlling the ball. The peed Chairs are limited to 10 km/h during matches. Players control their chairs by the use of joysticks for precise movement and positioning. The bumpers (Footguards) are used for passing, blocking, and performing full spins . Many competitive players use the Strikeforce, a purpose‑built sports powerchair designed for power, stability, and tight turning.
equipment used
The game is played with an oversized football, it's played on an indoor court (basketball size). players wear team kits and have a squad number on the back of their chairs, player will sometime use gloves for joystick grip but this is optional.
governing bodies
In the UK, Powerchair Football is governed by the Wheelchair Football Association (WFA). The WFA oversees the national league system, coaching and referee standards, and the England national team. They also run an official YouTube channel where many league matches and major events are streamed for fans to watch.
Globally, Powerchair Football is overseen by FIPFA, the international federation responsible for the official rules and major competitions such as the World Cup. FIPFA also streams international matches and events online, allowing fans worldwide to follow the sport at the highest level.
